Multichoice Nigeria, owners of DStv and GOtv, yesterday kicked against yet
another hike in subscription tariff in the country.
They
accused the company of being insensitive to the plights of the citizens that
are passing through economic hardships.
In
a telephone interview, President, Association of Telephone, Cable Tv and
Internet Subscribers of Nigeria, Hon Sina Bilesanmi, said the hike was
ill-timed as it came at a time the Federal Government was positively responding
to the yearnings of the people by cushioning the impact the hardships people
are passing through in the country.
“It
came to us as a huge shock because it was not too long that Multichoice hiked
subscription fees in the country. Recall that in December last year, barely
five months ago, the company effected a tariff increase on its packages by
about 20 per cent. Now the company has announced another one daring the
customers. We have written letters seeking audience with the pay Tv company
without any response.
“We
appeal to President Bola Tinubu to do everything in his capacity to break the
near-monopoly of Multichoice in the pay Tv sub-sector of the broadcast
industry. We also enjoin the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Federal
Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCPC) to wade into this
incessant subscription fees hike in Nigeria,” Bilesanmi said.
Multichoice
yesterday announced a price hike for its subscription packages which will take
effect from May 1, 2024, about five months after its last price upward review.
The
company, in a statement entitled: ‘Price Adjustment on DStv and GOtv Packages,’
read in part: “On Wednesday, 1 May 2024 we will adjust our prices across all
our packages on DStv and GOtv.
“We understand the impact this change may have
on you our valued customer, but the rise in the cost of business operations has
led us to make this difficult decision.
“It
remains our mission to provide the best entertainment and viewing experience to
you and are committed to continue to deliver high-quality content and unparalleled
service.”
Cable
TV blamed the latest increase on the “rise in the cost of business operations.”
The
new prices for DStv packages are Premium: N37,000; Compact Plus: N25,000; Compact:
N15,700; Confam: N9,300; Yanga: N5,100; Padi: N3,60; HDPVR Access Service:
N5,000; Access Fees: 5,000; and XtraView: N5,000.
The
new prices for GOtv packages are: Supa+: N15,700; Supa: N9,600; Max: N7,200;
Jolli: N4,850; Jinja: N3,300; and Smallie: N1,575
