Super Eagles skipper, Ahmed Musa has revealed that the Nigeria’s senior national team will be among the frontrunners for the title at the next year’s African Cup of Nations slated for Cameroon in January.
Musa told journalists that the presence of young players in the Eagles has given him the convinction that Nigeria has what it takes to wrestle the African title from Algeria and while also hoping that the team gets to either the quarterfinal or semifinal at the next World Cup in Qatar.
“At the last AFCON, it was Kenneth Omeruo and myself that were the most experienced players in the team and we finished third with the bulk of the young players that made their debut at AFCON,” Musa told journalists.
“I am sure at the next AFCON, we can achieve more than that with the calibre of players in the team who are every week basis in Europe.”
He added: “As a team and player, we always talk about exceeding the second-round finish at the World Cup or the idea of just taking part in the competition. We want to get to the quarterfinal or semifinal this time around and I am sure with the quality of players in the team we can achieve this.
“Since Coach Rohr took charge of the team we have been qualifying for most of the major competitions and this will not be an exception and our focus now is to qualify and let us see what will happen after that.”
Super Eagles have featured on six different occasions at the FIFA World Cup with the country’s best only a second-round finish achieved in 1994, 1998, 2014, and 2018.
