This decision aligns with the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management adopted in 2020, which aims to ban certain categories of plastics by January 2025, including plastic spoons, straws, PET bottles, and water sachets.
Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, shared this update during a briefing at the Presidential Villa after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. The minister emphasized that this move is part of the government’s efforts to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution, which pose significant challenges to the country.
Salako highlighted the detrimental effects of plastic waste, such as clogging drains and contributing to flooding, as well as polluting oceans and impacting human health and the environment. The minister noted that the Federal Government is taking the lead in this initiative to set an example for Nigerians.
Earlier in January, the Lagos State Government had already implemented a ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam within the state.
