In anticipation of nationwide protests scheduled to start on August 1, 2024, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, has instructed university vice-chancellors to implement measures ensuring the security and safety of their campuses.
A statement released on Monday by Chris Maiyaki, acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), detailed the minister’s directives. Vice-chancellors are urged to issue clear communications to reassure staff and students of their safety amid the anticipated demonstrations.
The statement advised that vice-chancellors take proactive steps to safeguard the university community and recommended that students remain on campus to minimize exposure to potential risks associated with the protests. The directive aims to maintain focus on academic activities while avoiding potential dangers.
The Federal Government acknowledged Nigerians’ right to peaceful protest but expressed concern for the safety of individuals and university property during the planned demonstrations.
