Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down as coach of the Super Eagles after they crashed out of the AFCON just as he has charged the team to now go ahead to qualify for the World Cup ahead of rivals Ghana.
The Eagles were eliminated from the 2021 AFCON after they lost by the odd goal to Tunisia in a Round of 16 tie in Garoua Sunday night.
Eguavoen, who took charge of the team in a temporary capacity following the dismissal of Gernot Rohr, has now said he will return his post as NFF technical director.
“I’m the technical director of the NFF. I will go back to my job and allow the authorities to decide (who the next Super
Eagles coach will be),” he said at a post-match media briefing.
The former international defender has also tasked the Eagles to put the AFCON disappointment them and qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
“I have told the boys to pick up and ensure they qualify Nigeria for the World Cup,” he said.
Nigeria will battle perennial rivals Ghana over two legs between March 23 and 29 for a place at this year’s World Cup.
