The Kogi State legislature has resolved to extend the tenure of the Transition Committee Chairmen during its plenary session on Friday. This decision follows a letter from Governor Usman Ododo, citing financial constraints and a high wage bill as reasons for the postponement of local government elections in the state.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Umar Yusuf, read the governor’s letter during the session, emphasizing the need for the extension. “In the next six months, it will be interesting at the local government level as there will be mostly submission of reports to the Assembly. The Chairmen henceforth should take note of this,” Yusuf stated, urging the chairmen to serve as good ambassadors of their respective local governments.
The tenure of the 21 Transition Committee Chairmen was initially set to expire on July 8, 2024. With the House’s approval, their terms have now been extended to January 8, 2025, when the local government elections are expected to be conducted.
