In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, both parties announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at supporting Nigeria’s power sector development. The MoU, signed by USAID/Nigeria Mission Director Melissa Jones and Federal Ministry of Power Permanent Secretary Mahmuda Mamman, marks the implementation of a US government grant-funded technical assistance program worth ₦115.2 billion.
Jones emphasized the US government’s commitment to advancing electrification in Nigeria, highlighting the collaboration’s goal to strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders including state and local governments, electricity generation and distribution sectors, and the off-grid sector.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu expressed gratitude for USAID’s support, underscoring the transformative potential of the partnership in achieving sustainable and reliable electricity supply nationwide. The initiative is part of USAID’s broader Power Africa Initiative, which aims to double electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa and has already connected over 33 million Nigerians and mobilized $4.5 billion for power projects.
Richard Nelson, the US government’s Power Africa Coordinator, reaffirmed Nigeria’s pivotal role in the initiative’s strategy, aiming to advance access to reliable and affordable power across the country.
