MTN Shuts Stores Amid Subscriber Outrage

Telecoms giant MTN has shut all its stores and service centres across Nigeria following subscriber outrage over blocked lines due to a mismatch in their National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM registration. In a viral video on social media, a mob is seen destroying a barricade fence outside the MTN office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the police had restored normalcy at the scene. Reacting on Tuesday, MTN announced it would be shutting its shops nationwide. “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” read a statement from MTN on X.com. Further details are expected to be released later.
