The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed approximately 100 shops in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu State, for allegedly dealing in suspected fake alcoholic beverages.
NAFDAC’s Director for the South-east, Martins Iluyomade, announced the closures, stating the action followed a raid by agency officials on Monday.
“During the raid, a truckload of adulterated products was confiscated, and four traders suspected of selling fake beverages were arrested,” Iluyomade, a pharmacist, reported.
“We stormed the popular Ogbete Main Market in Enugu State and have shut down 100 shops identified for selling fake alcoholic beverages. Arrests were made, and the suspects are currently in custody,” he added.
Iluyomade emphasized that the fake wine and alcoholic beverages were being sold to unsuspecting customers and the general public. “We are determined to rid the market of these unwholesome products,” he asserted.
The NAFDAC chief indicated that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
The raid, Iluyomade explained, aligns with NAFDAC’s mandate to safeguard the health of Nigerians and eliminate “unwholesome, substandard, fake, and adulterated products” from the South-east region.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with personnel from the Nigerian Police Force, State Security Service, and the Nigerian Army.
