The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the government and organizers of the planned hardship demonstration to call off the protest and embrace dialogue to address the plight of the Nigerian people. In a letter dated July 29th and signed by its President, Yakubu Maikyau, the NBA also urged National and State Houses of Assembly members to engage with their constituents on government plans to address their demands.
The NBA recommended a National Security Summit involving military, police, intelligence, and other law enforcement officers to reassess the security situation and develop solutions. Traditional institutions, religious leaders, and civil society organizations should be involved in the dialogue and monitoring of implementation decisions.
While acknowledging widespread hunger, the NBA appealed to Nigerians to refrain from actions that could have a devastating effect on the country, referencing the negative impact of the last #EndSARS protest on the economy. The NBA called for frank discussions on improving the plight of the people and suggested regular engagement between the government and citizens.
