The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command has announced the deployment of 1,190 officers and personnel in preparation for the nationwide protest slated to commence on August 1.
Anambra State Commandant of the NSCDC, Maku Olatunde, disclosed this deployment in Awka, the state capital, following a strategic meeting with other service commanders in the state.
This information was revealed in a statement issued on Monday by Okadigbo Edwin, Head of Media and Tactical Operations for the command.
Edwin emphasized the command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the planned protest. He noted that the deployment aligns with directives from the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, who instructed the corps to uphold its role as the primary agency responsible for protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.
“While 350 personnel are designated for the anti sit-at-home order operations on Monday, 840 personnel are assigned to counter all forms of violent protests and lawlessness, as well as to prevent vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure,” the statement read.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its proactive stance against any activities threatening the peaceful coexistence of Anambra residents or jeopardizing national critical assets and infrastructure. “The Command will not remain passive or indifferent in the face of violent activities. Instead, we will take proactive measures to prevent and counteract such actions, ensuring the safety and security of Anambra citizens and the protection of critical assets,” the statement added.
While acknowledging citizens’ rights to protest, the NSCDC urged organizers to adhere strictly to legal boundaries. “Individuals contemplating illegal acts during the protest, such as tampering with government assets or infrastructure, will face severe legal consequences. Disrupting social and economic activities in the state, particularly at strategic facilities like airports and hospitals, and hindering essential service providers from carrying out their duties, is strictly prohibited. Those who ignore these warnings will be held accountable and face the full force of the law,” the statement warned.
The NSCDC’s firm stance underscores its dedication to safeguarding the state’s peace and infrastructure during the upcoming protest.
