Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has passed away at the age of 82. The news was confirmed by his son, Jide Iwuanyanwu.
In a statement released on Thursday, Jide Iwuanyanwu said, “The Iwuanyanwu family of Umuohii Atta, in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, announces the demise of our patriarch, Engr Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu-Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo.” The statement added that Chief Iwuanyanwu died after a brief illness.
Chief Iwuanyanwu, a prominent Nigerian politician and businessman, was born on September 4, 1942, to Pa Bernard Iwuanyanwu and Madam Hulder Iwuanyanwu in Umuohii Atta, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. He was known as one of the wealthiest Igbo men in Nigeria and had a significant influence in both political and business circles.
He was appointed the 11th President-General of the Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on April 20, 2023, succeeding George Obiozor, who had passed away on December 29, 2022. Chief Iwuanyanwu was also the President of the Owerri Peoples Assembly.
He is survived by his wife, Lady Princess Frances Iwuanyanwu, as well as many children and grandchildren. The family has announced that burial details will be shared after consultations.
Chief Iwuanyanwu’s death marks the end of an era for the Iwuanyanwu family and the wider Igbo community, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and influence.
