Police Neutralize Nine Suspected Kidnappers in Lagos Shootout

Lagos, July 6, 2024 – In a decisive operation, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the death of nine suspected kidnappers following a shootout on Thursday. The confrontation occurred in the Ladipo area of Mushin, resulting in the recovery of multiple weapons and vehicles.

Lagos police spokesperson, Superintendent Benjamin Hundeyin, addressed journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja, detailing the operation that led to this significant breakthrough. The Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, commended the officers involved, highlighting the meticulous intelligence work that preceded the operation.

“Our intelligence gathering assets provided credible and actionable information about a notorious gang planning to kidnap high-net-worth individuals in the state,” Mr Hundeyin stated. “Acting on this intelligence, CP Fayoade directed the Command’s tactical teams to commence surveillance and preparation two weeks ago. Their diligent monitoring revealed that the gang intended to strike in the Ladipo area.”

The police laid an ambush for the kidnappers, who, despite being caught off guard, engaged the officers in a fierce shootout. “They bowed to the superior firepower of the police,” Mr. Hundeyin noted. “Nine of them were neutralized, while two managed to escape with gunshot injuries.”

Recovered from the scene were four AK-47 rifles, four locally-made semi-automatic pistols, nine AK-47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, and two operational vehicles, a black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350. The police are currently investigating to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The police spokesperson revealed that the Command had been tracking the gang for eight months, following their involvement in multiple kidnappings of wealthy individuals in the Isolo, Okota, Ejigbo, and Ladipo areas of Lagos State.

“We are proud to declare that their reign of terror has effectively come to an end,” Mr. Hundeyin said. “This breakthrough is part of our ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend gangs of kidnappers and armed robbers before they can execute their plans.”

The Lagos State Police Command’s latest success underscores its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents, with ongoing operations to dismantle criminal networks across the state.
