A prominent Nigerian Islamic cleric, Sheikh Muhydeen Bello, urged politicians to be mindful of their actions while in office, emphasizing that “you will all become a story after office.” This message was delivered during the four-year remembrance of the late former Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, held at his private residence on Ring Road in Ibadan, the state capital.
Bello criticized the political class for their insatiable greed and lack of fear of God. He advised them to live lives that would leave positive legacies and to use the occasion to unite the political family of the Ajimobis and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.
“Without unity, you may not be able to carry on the late Ajimobi’s legacies,” Bello stated. He called on Senator Teslim Folarin, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, to correct any wrong impressions and become a unifying figure for other party members.
Bello reflected on Ajimobi’s legacy, emphasizing the importance of politicians being remembered for their good deeds. He urged the politicians present to fear God, be satisfied with what they have, and work for posterity.
He lamented, “You ate with Ajimobi, yet you fought him, and you still think you are angry with him even in death. This is about Ajimobi; we are seeing his end; they will also see our ends, too. Let’s work for posterity and see what our future will look like.”
Bello’s call for unity among politicians included an appeal for them to love each other, be truthful, and work together in honor of Ajimobi’s memory. He urged them to consider what they will be remembered for after their death and to strive for unity within the party.
Dignitaries in attendance included the wife of the deceased, Florence Ajimobi; his younger brother, Wasiu Ajimobi; former Deputy Governor, Alake Adeyemo; former deputy governor to Governor Seyi Makinde, Rauf Olaniyan; Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zacheus Adelabu; and Oyo APC governorship candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin. Also present were Senators Sharafadeen Alli (Oyo South), Fatai Buhari (Oyo North), and Yunus Akintunde (Oyo Central), along with a former Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Olalekan Alli.
Other notable attendees included former Sports Minister Sunday Dare, Adeola Akande, former Oyo APC Chairman Akin Oke, Akeem Agbaje, ex-Health Commissioner Azeez Adeduntan, ex-ALGON Oyo Chairmen Abass Aleshinloye, Yekeen Popoola, Kolapo Daisi, Bisoye Fagade, Seyi Adisa, Kehinde Subair, Azeez Bolaji, Olayemi Ariba, and Olatunji Olawale.
