Potiskum, Yobe State, In a wave of nationwide protests under the #EndBadGovernance movement, seven mass transit buses were set ablaze on Monday in Potiskum, the headquarters of Potiskum Local Government Area. The incident took place at the local government secretariat, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing demonstrations.
Eyewitnesses reported to Channels Television that a group of individuals attempted to incite further violence but were swiftly intercepted by security personnel on the scene.
Dungus Abdulkarim, the spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, confirmed the incident, assuring the public that the perpetrators would be apprehended and prosecuted.
The protests, driven by social media advocacy, began on Thursday, August 1, 2024, highlighting economic hardship across the nation. Scheduled to continue until August 10, the demonstrations are taking place in all states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
In response to the unrest, the state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru towns, where vandalism and looting of both government and private properties have been reported.
Dairy Abdulsalam, the Special Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Security Matters, called on residents to comply with the curfew to ensure peace. He emphasized that security agencies have been instructed to enforce the curfew strictly to restore order in the affected areas and the state at large.
