During a public hearing by the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity, discussions focused on a bill aimed at the domestication and registration of domestic workers and their employers in Nigeria.
Senator Osita Izunaso, representing Imo West, and Geraldeen Etuk, Acting National President of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), advocated for incorporating domestic workers into the proposed National Minimum Wage Law. They emphasized that domestic workers, including housemaids and servants, should receive the proposed minimum wage of ₦70,000, applicable to all employers.
Senator Izunaso stated, “I strongly believe that the bill should include domestic workers in the ₦70,000 National Minimum Wage Law, just as it applies to the lowest public sector workers.”
Committee Chairman Senator Diket Plang confirmed that a new agency will be established to oversee the implementation of the law, with operations managed by the Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
