Robert Menendez, a veteran Democrat from New Jersey, has been formally charged with extortion, obstruction of justice, and accepting bribes. The charges stem from allegations that he used his political influence to benefit businessmen connected to Egypt and Qatar. His sentencing is scheduled for a later date.
Previously a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Menendez announced his intention to run independently in the upcoming November election earlier this year. His political career has been under scrutiny since the charges were filed against him.
During a raid on his residence in New Jersey, FBI agents reportedly discovered close to $500,000 in cash hidden throughout the premises, along with approximately $150,000 worth of gold bars and a luxurious Mercedes-Benz convertible.
Menendez’s wife, Nadine Menendez, who defense attorneys are attempting to implicate, has also been indicted. However, due to her ongoing treatment for breast cancer, her trial will be conducted separately.
Prosecutors have accused Menendez of exploiting his position as a prominent U.S. senator, alleging that he effectively put his influence up for sale.
